Nijmegen

Where to go for a walk

The Nijmegen city walls

Nijmegen has a long history of fortifications, and remnants of the old city walls can still be seen in places around the city. The best-preserved section of the wall is near the Valkhof Park.

 

The “Two Bridges” route

This is a popular walking and cycling route that takes you along the Waal river and across the two bridges that connect Nijmegen with the neighbouring town of Lent. The route offers stunning views of the river and the city skyline. This route is described in more detail below.

 

The Oversteek

The Oversteek is a modern pedestrian and cycling bridge that spans the Waal river and connects Nijmegen with the town of Lent. It’s a beautiful and iconic landmark in the city, with a unique design that features a series of tall, illuminated arches.

The "Two Bridges" route

The Two Bridges route is a popular walking and cycling route that takes you along the Waal river and across the two bridges that connect Nijmegen with the neighbouring town of Lent. The route is about 7 kilometres long and offers stunning views of the river and the city skyline.

The first bridge you cross is the Waalbrug, a beautiful and iconic bridge that dates back to the 1930s. It’s a suspension bridge that features two large towers and a beautiful view of the city. The Waalbrug played an important role in the Second World War, as it was a strategic target for the Allied forces during Operation Market Garden.

After crossing the Waalbrug, you’ll arrive on the island between the two bridges, where you’ll see the impressive Nijmegen Helmet statue, a large and impressive sculpture that is a tribute to the Roman history of the area. 

From the island, you’ll cross the second bridge, the Snelbinder, which is a modern cycling and pedestrian bridge that offers stunning views of the river and the surrounding landscape. As you make your way back to Nijmegen, you’ll pass through the Waalfront, a new and modern district that is currently under development.

The Two Bridges route is a great way to explore the area around Nijmegen and to get some exercise while enjoying beautiful views of the river and the city. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s definitely worth checking out.
